Career Moves as a Reflection of your Hobby
What is the relationship between our hobbies and our careers? turns out these two are intertwined. In this interview I ask "mozila" to describe his career moves and explore the interconnectedness with his hobby. As you'll see, both his career and hobby are quite challenging.
Q: Tell me about the best career move you've made so far.
A: My best carrier move was when I have started my own business. I was working in the company which I could not leave at that time, where I couldn't utilize all of my abilities or grow professionally. Starting new company gave me the opportunity to grow professionally, to create and develop excited live changing opportunity from scratch. This literally change my live. Even if business will not succeed to the degree I want it to succeed, it help me to learn what carrier path I want to take. But I thought we are going to talk about my hobby.

Q: We can talk about your hobby, or maybe about the relationship between your hobby and your career. How are they related?
A: Don't think they are related. My hobby is hockey. Love this game and playing when I have time, at list once a week.

Q: Are you sure they are not related? how about the desire to win, to be better than other, to achieve more? Hockey is a demanding and challenging game that not many people can play. The mere fact that you do it as a hobby says a lot about you.
A: Well, thank you for the complement. What you are describing it's a characteristics that characterize me as a person and I would agree with you that I like the challenges and do what ever it takes to overcome them and to succeed. Whether it's the personal or professional life. Facing the challenges, "working them", overcoming the obstacles it's a great way to improve yourself and achieve something meaningful in your life. I liked hockey since I was a boy but I didn't have the opportunity to play other then on the streets. I am a good skater but hockey requires different set of skating skills, different from skills you learn on public skating sessions skating always on way. 4 years ago I just purchased the equipment and went to the "pick-up hockey" game. The first time I tried to hit the pack I fell on the ice. This was challenging. Playing hockey and to be a mediocre player was not an option for me and I went to the hockey clinics, practiced in the garage and tried to play as much as I could. Now I'm playing a good solid hockey game and able to "keep up" with college kids and challenge them sometimes.

Q: Does this transition - from a wannabe hockey player to a good one - resemble any of your career moves?
A: I see the “career move” as decision you make, the step you take, the change in the direction … What you are referring here is a *process* of self improvements that I always strive to make. I would agree that my choice of the hobby reflects my personality and it is connected to my carrier development in indirect way, as everything in our live connected in someway.

Everything is connected indeed. It's interesting to see how our off-work like reflect on our work life. Some people might actually opt for the opposite - a low-key hobby and a turbulent career. I'll try to explore that in followup interviews.
